Experimental 3D texturing in Flash MX

A few years ago I drew and colored this truck and stored it away in my clipart collection, and I must have forgot about it because when I found it, it was covered in rust!!!

Anyways, recently I have been trying a few tricks and really seeing what Flash can do, and I been getting really big into sticking real life texture into my cartoons and giving them a different look and making them come alive rather than just putting in plain color! After texturing this one little truck, I defenitely have some major respect for people who do this for a living at Pixar, and Dreamworks because, "MAN!" that seriously took forever. Also, I completely vectorized it, which was also a very long process in itself! But I think the end result looks pretty darn cool! I hope whoever else comes across it enjoy's it too, and even leaves a comment! =)

Edgar Allen Poe Project!

"From childhood's earliest hour I have not been as others were; I have not seen as others saw; I could not bring my passions from a common spring". -Edgar Allen Poe

This is artwork for a short film project I've been developing ever since college when it first popped up in my head, and I would like to try and finish it before I forget it all!! You know how it is when you get older...lol

Darth-Lyng!

This was my version of Darth Vader for Josh Frosts tribute book called, "100 ways to the darkside". He contacted 100 artists to illustrate darth vader in their own way and style which is totally down my alley! After everyone has given him their illustrations, they're going in a book and then I think he'll try and present it to George Lucas which should be pretty cool!

Cartoons Inc. Drawing Contest!

In honor of Drawing day 09', Cartoons Inc. is having its first official drawing contest! I have had a number of people say they would like to colaborate, which gave me this idea. Below will be posted a sketch I have done. Your job is to take it and make it your own. It needs to be inked and colored in your own style, in your own way! How is this different from say Illustration Friday and other weekly drawing communities you ask??? I will pick the winner and that person will not only recieve the $100 prize, their finished product will be posted on my blog as the chosen winner for that week. So that is how Cartoons Inc. is different, you get paid for your time and art!!! I believe that if an artist creates a winning illustration, he or she should be paid for their time! Just click the image to enlarge it, and then paste into whichever drawing program that you use and then submit it with the subject reading: Contest Art!

Sketch by:
Cartoons Inc.
Contest rules:
To be eligable, you must be a follower of Cartoons Inc. if not already!
You must have your artwork submitted by the June 13th deadline
You must have it fully inked and colored ( doesn't have to be done digitally)
I will still own all rights to the image (I'm just paying to have it illustrated!)
Have fun with it at all times!
Winner will be announced and paid on June 15th via Paypal!

Mix 93 logo contest

I had heard about a radio station called Mix 93 having a logo contest with a cash prize of $500 dollars if you win. So I entered it, but the only problem I have with this sort of thing is that if I don't win, I'm out my time AND, I'm stuck with a losing logo I dont really need and I'm back to square one....lol. But if I win then you gotta think it's a logo for a radio station where hundreds of people will see, which in turn means more exposure for Cartoons Inc., so who knows! Here's the link to the contest! Mix 93 logo contest! The end of the contest is on June 14....so hurry and get your logo in!

IF: Theatre

I'm not quite sure if Edgar Allen Poe was theatre, but it's the closest thing I had to this weeks topic. I absolutely love all of Poes writings so I figured I would do a caricature to symbolize a young, youthful, yet very disturbed Poe!.... ENJOY!

Brooke Ashley Legers Illustrations

I had to post these illustrations done by my 8 year old niece Brooke Ashley Leger, she gave them to me when I saw her this past weekend and I thought they were so good that I just had to post them on my blog. I wish I could say that I taught her everything she knows but this girl is so artistic that she doesn't need my help....I consider her to be the most talented eight year old artist I have ever come across. A while back I tried doing some business with her but she was way to busy into her work to deal with a small time cartoonist like me!!!..HAHA :) I think I also might hang on to these original drawings, because the way she's going, these sketches will be worth millions one day when she becomes a famous fashion designer!! I love you Brooke and keep up the good work! Uncle J!

American Idle

This is one of several illustrations I completed for, It's in the Journey apparel. It's a play off words concept that the founders came up with. Their message is about finding the joy through your journey in life, hince the it's in the JOurneY. All of the illustrations I completed for them were fun and really inspiring to draw, and if I had to pick just one out of the pile, it would have to be American Idle. If you get a chance, go check out Tim Malloys site, It's in the Journey Apparel for some really great inspirational swag!

Cartoon kids book illustration

This is an illustration for a kids learning text book I recently completed for a client in Japan! I took a few of the extra illustrations out to get a close up on the kids. Although I liked a few other pages, I have to admit this was my favorite page out of eight that I finished.

2007 AGDM

If you are picking up this book for the first time, you might not know quite how to start using it. Your first impulse might be to flip through and quickly make a mailing list, submitting to everyone with hopes that someone might like your work. Resist that urge.
First you have to narrow down the names in this book to those who need your particular art style. That's what this book is all about. They provide the names and addresses of art buyers along with plenty of marketing tips. You provide the hard work, creativity and patience necessary to hang in there until work starts coming your way!

What you'll find in this book
The book is divided into five parts:

  1. Business articles and interviews

  2. Section introductions

  3. Listings of companies and galleries

  4. Insider reports

  5. Indexes

But before you get started, check out Dave Romans advice for building a career as a freelance artist and/or paid cartoonist here!

"DOG" got Canned!

"How'z it bra!"....I don't know about anybody else, but I LOVED watching "DOG" the Bounty Hunter. Yeah I admit he was a little cooky, and times a little weird, but all in all it was a fun reality show to watch on tuesday nights! I just wish A&E stood by him and didn't drop him like a bad habit, he had a hit show for pete sake, I mean come on, everybody makes mistakes. In my opinion he did more good than bad and he deserves to have his show back. Well I've put in my two cents I hope you enjoy the drawing of my tribute to "DOG" the Bounty Hunter!

Bigfoot's slippin!

This would have been a sweet shot of bigfoot I took while I was hiking the other day, but my dadgum finger got in the way of a great shot! It's all good though because I added him as one of my friends on Myspace and he excepted me, so I'll send him a comment later!.....

Cartoons Inc. & Shaggy Duck Studios

This cool cartoon logo was the very first successfull collaboration between Shaggy Duck Studios & Cartoons Inc. I initially thought I would be doing all the drawing and coloring for this logo, but it was later decided that I would just come up with the design, fill in the lines and send it over to Curtis who would then finish it by adding color and company logo along with other minor details needed for his client! The end result was really cool and looked similar to the finished logo above, I hope he doesn't mind, but I took the liberty to spice it up a bit by going back through it and giving it the Cartoons Inc. touch!! I used the original colors used by Curtis, but I put shading in, took out the mouse infront of the dog and added a thick black outer line around the outside of the animals!

Cartoons Inc. launches Toonmatic-1000

Cartoons Incorporated® is proud to present the newest and latest version of the Toonmatic series of INSTANT FREELANCE CARTOONS! Without further ado, and with much anticipation, I present to you..Toonmatic-1000!!
Yeah right! I wish it was as simple as pressing an easy button and having a big industrial sized machine pump out thousands of instant cartoons that are shipped right to your front door! But it's not. You still have to put in the time and sit infront of your computer for hours staring at your screen, draining your brain power trying to meet your deadline! If only there was a way to hook a usb chord straight from your head to the Toonmatic-1000 and have it print out all your cartoons, maybe one day. But in the mean time, the old fashioned way is gonna have to do for now!

Creation of a Grizzzzley Bear!

As a cartoonist, I always wondered how other cartoonists were drawing and creating their cartoons!!
Well, here's a little look at how I draw and create mine. First, I'll draw a rough sketch on a drawing pad using a red pencil, and after I'm semi-satisfied with how it looks on paper, I'll then scan it into the computer. Then, I'll open it into Flash mx, create a second layer and draw over the top of my rough sketch. Thirdly, I'll put color and shading in. This I have to say is my favorite part of the whole cartoon drawing process, well besides being finished!
